A dress fitting is basically an appointment with a tailor to have alterations made to achieve a correct fit and ensure the gown is appropriately shaped to your figure. Some may require a couple fittings before their dress is ready for wear. Practically every dress should receive some alterations – even if they are minor changes – to ensure a good fit.
Fundamental alterations typically start by hemming the length, making adjustments to the sides of the dress, and generally “dialing in” the fit.
The number of fittings you may require usually depends upon how many alterations are necessary.
Another factor is how much your figure may change between when you first choose a dress and the actual day. The dress will begin to take proper shape at the first fitting as your tailor starts pinning the fabric and adjusting it to your body. At the next fitting, you will gain a better feel of how the dress is going to fit.
